As a result of the recent YAM Jam Conference, we have re-activated this blog, and hope it will be a way to think collectively about the many aspects of collegiate ministry.

It's been a few weeks now since the Young Adult Minisry Jam in Austin, TX. For me, it was the end of the semester. What a great way to begin processing the past year in ministry. Being around others who love young adults, considering together MUCH that has to do with college students and the Presbyterian church (es).

For me, "young adult" means college students. Mostly, I think. That's the job I've been called to do for a local congregation just a block from a large university. It made sense to me to learn that our young adults (post-moderns) are not always finding what they need (want) in our churches. Fortunately, we all know that God is at work in many other places (everywhere!). And, maybe it shouldn't disappoint us too much. Because our young adults are in a stage in their lives when they wandering, they're leaving home. They've got to do this. It's part of growing up and maturing. So, the question I need to consider more fully is how does my ministry (our ministries!) give them the safe space to wander, to try out new things in a pursuit to better know who and whose they are? Not to tell them who they are, but to nurture relationships and create spaces for them to begin to discover that holy mystery. I suppose part of that is our practices, our events and programs. But not just what they are, but how we do them. And, then there is the spontaneous part of our presence and our trusting of the Spirit in our work. SO much to consider. Glad the summer lasts a few months!
